On Friday June 12, 2015 Brucie Magdalene Walker McElroy heard the call of her Master’s voice and went home to be with him. Mrs. McElroy had been in declining health for several months and was living at Landmarks of Desoto at the time.
She was born in Sage, Arkansas March 31, 1926 to Martha Jane White Walker
and Perry Caswell Walker. Her Father was a farmer and a deacon in the local Church of Christ, her Mother a home maker. This is the second obituary published for Mrs. McElroy. In 1932 as a first grader she nearly froze walking two miles to school in the snow. If not for the faithfulness of her older brother Jim who kept encouraging her, holding her hand and giving her his coat and the teacher at the one room schoolhouse who sat her in front of the fire and rubbed her frozen limbs little Brucie would not have survived. The following day the Melbourne News reported she had succumbed to the bitter cold.
In 1944 Mrs. McElroy and her only sister Mary Maxine came to Memphis where Mrs. McElroy got her first job at Pantaze Drugs on Main Street. Both sisters were later hired to work at the Kimberly-Clark Corporation, where 35 years later Mrs. McElroy retired to attend to her ailing husband, Calvin L. McElroy originally from Wynne, Arkansas.
After Mr. McElroy’s death she went on to be a senior caregiver for several years touching the lives of many seniors and their families with both her compassion and caring. Her final job was for Wendy’s International where she worked several years for her grand daughter Amanda at the Wendy’s location on Quince in Memphis. She finally retired at the age of 82 after quadruple heart bypass surgery.
Mrs. McElroy was a life long member of the Church of Christ and a member of the Southwind Church of Christ at the time of her death.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her six siblings. James Walker of Hot Springs, Arkanasa, Garfield Walker of Robinston, Maine, Curtis Walker of Marion, Arkansas, Mary Maxine Miller of Parsons, Tennessee, Zella Moudy of Oklahoma and Delbert Walker.
Mrs. McElroy leaves behind a heartbroken family and many friends. Her daughter and son in law Mr. & Mrs. Brian Moore of Hernando, Mississippi, a granddaughter and son in law Mr. & Mrs. Mark Watson of Oakland, Tennessee and a great granddaughter, Ashley Craig of Cordova, Tennessee.
One of her last bits of advice was to “Be Ready”. Mrs. Brucie was ready.
The family will receive friends Sunday, June 14, 2015 from 4-6 p.m. at Memphis Funeral Home, 3700 N. Germantown Parkway. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, June 15, 2015 at 10 a.m. also at Memphis Funeral Home, 3700 N. Germantown Parkway, Bartlett with interment to follow at Memphis Memorial Gardens.
