Born and raised in Memphis, Mark built a life rooted in hard work, faith, and an unwavering devotion to his family. He was a man who didn’t do anything halfway — whether it was a day’s work, helping others at the drag strip, or loving the people he called his own.
Mark served his country in the Army National Guard at Fort Leonard Wood before beginning what would become a nearly 40-year career in transportation. He started as a mechanic at MS Carriers on April 1, 1987 — a company that is now Swift Transportation — and worked his way up to supervisor through sheer dedication and grit. Along the way, he earned his hazmat certifications and spent eight years hauling fuel, work that demanded both skill and responsibility he carried with pride. His dedication was recognized in February 2012 when he was honored with the Excellence in Maintenance Supervision Award by the Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC) of the American Trucking Association — a distinction that reflected not just his work ethic, but the respect he had earned from those around him. When health forced him onto medical leave in February of this year, his heart was still set on returning so he could retire on his own terms. That was Mark — he wanted to finish what he started.
Beyond his career, Mark was known for his years racing at Byhalia Drag Strip, his love of God, and above all, his family. Nothing lit him up quite like his children and grandchildren. He loved them fiercely and without reservation, and they knew it in everything he did. He enjoyed helping others, loved deeply, and worked tirelessly — the kind of man whose presence made everyone around him feel steady.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Floy McCoy.and is survived by his beloved wife, Janice, daughter, Ashley Murray (Jeremy), son, Tristan McCoy (Wendy), granddaughters, Raianna and Keely Murray, grandson, Cruz McCoy, brothers James McCoy (Renee), David McCoy (Denise) and sister, Mary McCoy, eight nieces and nephews, and a multitude of great nieces and nephews.
