Donald Alvin Martin, known as “Alvin” or “Big Al”, went to be with the Lord January 2, 2021 at the age of 68 years. He was a lifelong Memphis resident, a devout Christian, and a loving husband and father.
His life centered around family and friends. He was crazy about his kids and never missed an opportunity to tell them how proud he was or how much he loved them. He enjoyed gathering with friends to catch up over coffee or to tackle a new project together.
He believed in showing love and kindness to others—he never hesitated to lend a helping hand. He was known for his friendliness and never met a stranger. Many times, a simple trip to the store would result in him finding a new friend.
He loved old cars, antique furniture, old tools, and anything with a good story behind it. He enjoyed attending auctions, yard sales, and estate sales looking for old and unusual items. There was nothing more satisfying to him than finding a good deal and sharing the story behind his finds.
He was a hard worker who believed deeply in a good work ethic. Alvin graduated from Frayser High School in 1970 and immediately entered the plumbing apprenticeship program. He worked as a plumber for the Shelby County and Memphis City school system for 45 years and was a member of the Plumber’s Union Local #17.
He was also a Mason of the 32nd degree with the Tennessee Freemason Masonic Lodge #746 and a member of the Al Chymia Scottish Rite.
He was an extraordinary man and will be dearly missed by all that knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Cheryl Holland Martin, son Joseph Allen Martin (Sara Martin), daughter Emily Renea Martin (Ross Bradley), two brothers Tommy Ray Martin and Johnathan Martin, nephews Jon Martin, Brad Holland, Kevin Holland, and nieces Jennifer Haworth McCoy, Ashlee Martin, Catie Holland, and Shannon Martin.
He is preceded in death by his parents Mary Maydell Martin and Donald Ray Martin, sister Patricia Ann Phelps, and nephew Jeffery Haworth.
