Mel was a loving husband, father, grandfather, professor, scout leader, member, and Elder of Buntyn Presbyterian Church. He was an avid outdoorsman and Scouter who believed in the worth of the Boy Scout program. As Professor Emeritus of The University of Memphis of 43 years, Melvin held degrees from The University of Tennessee at Martin, Memphis State University, and Indiana University leading to his passion for education. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Kay Humphreys; two sons, Andrew Humphreys (Terri) and Mark Humphreys (Elizabeth); nine grandchildren, Austin, Cooper, Haley, Samuel, Margaret, William, Thomas, Harrison, and Rebecca Humphreys; and his wonderful caregivers, Leola Morton, Melberta Spight, Linda Prewett and Greta Flowers. Visitation will be held at Buntyn Presbyterian Church on Friday, November 13, at 3 p.m. followed by the memorial service at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Buntyn Presbyterian Church or the charity of your choice.
