Dudley Akin, 77, of Bartlett, longtime educator with the Shelby County School System, passed away on Monday, April 28, 2014. He was a member of Ellendale Baptist Church and had held various teaching and principal positions throughout Shelby County. He Graduated from Millington Central High School in 1954, Memphis State University in 1958 and received his Master’s Degree in Math from the University of Illinois in 1964. His varied career included teaching math at Hillcrest High School from 1964 to 1967 and then as Assistant Principal from ’67 to’68. His next position was at Germantown High School as Assistant Principal from 1978 to 1984; then as Principal at Collierville High School from 1984 to 1992. He next served as Director of Maintenance of Shelby County Schools from 1992 until 2004. Mr. Akin, the husband of Nancy Akin for 55 years, also leaves a daughter, Karen Akin of Memphis and a son, Scott Akin of Arlington, TN. The family will receive friends Thursday evening, May 1, from 5-8 p.m. at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 N. Germantown Rd.
