Faye grew up in Rena Lara, Mississippi, close to Clarksdale, with her father and mother and five brothers. She was smack in the middle…three brothers older and two younger. She spent many days picking cotton alongside her brothers, playing on and around the Delta (amazing they survived many of their shenanigans), spending time with her best friend Pat, playing basketball and playing the piano. She is famous for playing point guard and throwing a pass so hard that the unsuspecting defender who tried to intercept it ended up with a broken hand.
She graduated from Sunflower High School in 1959 and was offered a music scholarship to Delta State University. She married and moved to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, then Shreveport, Louisiana (after thinking about moving to New Orleans; but when she saw their “Delta,” she said “there’s no way I am living here. All that water over there is going to end up right here.” She was correct!) and then settled in Memphis.
Faye had three daughters. Rebecca Lynn Bean (Becky), her oldest child, suffered with Spina Bifida and was projected to live less than seven years. Faye took great care of Becky, who lived to be 37 years old. Becky was followed by two more daughters to whom Faye instilled her work ethic, her generosity, her compassion and her stubbornness.
Faye is survived by her husband of 35 years, William Patrick Spurr and by her daughters Susan Bean Campbell (John Campbell) and Meredith Bean Holley (Brian Holley). She is also survived by her seven grandchildren: Luke Campbell (Summerlyn Poon-Campbell), Jesse Campbell, Anna Campbell, Abigail Hilliard, Tess Hilliard, Erica Holley and Trevor Holley.
Services will be held Thursday, February 20, at Memphis Funeral Home, 3700 N. Germantown Road, Bartlett, Tennessee, 38133. Visitation will be from 12-2pm followed by a graveside service at 2pm.
