Anyone who knows Elizabeth knows she had an immense gift for expression. Talk with her for a minute and you could immediately sense the quickness of her thought. Catch a glimpse of her smile and you could feel the lightness and radiance of her spirit. Those lucky enough to view her art, her drawings, could not help but be awestruck at her talent.
She had a passion for STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) the beauty of it, the mastery that comes with it – especially when it came to robotics – and the precision and logical thinking it required.
She wielded that same passion, precision and logic and when making an argument, for Elizabeth was also one with strongly held opinions. They were hers, she had a right to them, and no one could make her give them up. She was choosing her own life.
And then, just as her story was getting to the good part, where dreams turn into plans that turn into a life worth living, the story was cut short, never to be finished.... potential never to be fulfilled. And all we are left with, is this huge hole in our lives and in our hearts.
But into that hole we pour memory. Memory washes over us and begins the healing. That is why we gather today – to remember Elizabeth, celebrate her life and the gifts she gave us, and to begin to heal.
Memory cannot finish her story. But we, in our own way, can make sure her story never ends. We can speak truth to power. We can refuse to be intimidated. We can choose our own lives, to live authentically, fearlessly, no matter what anyone else says. We can care more...Today is too precious let yesterday’s hurts get in the way of loving each other. We can live as Elizabeth was learning to live and, in this way, make our lives a blessing, as she has been in ours.
