Mrs. Emma Erline “Mamaw” Braun, daughter of the late Charles Palmer Whitwell and Mary Atlas Kilpatrick Whitwell was born October 21, 1924 in Linden, TN. She moved to a farm in Trenton, TN at age 8. There were eight siblings, 2 brothers and 6 daughters. She graduated from Laneview High School. After graduation she moved to Memphis, TN to graduate from a business college.
It was in Memphis that she met and married James Porter Herring, in 1947. This union was blessed with two daughters, Dana Marie and Anita Sue Herring. James Herring preceded her in death in 1952. His death left her a widow with daughters 4½ and 6 months old. She remarried Tommy Braun, in 1960. This union was blessed with the birth of Carolyn Martin Braun. Tommy Martin Braun preceded her in death 1977.
At an early age she professed her faith in Jesus Christ and joined the United Methodist Church where she was a dedicated member. Mrs. Braun was a member of the Whitehaven United Methodist and Good Shepherd United Methodist churches in Memphis, TN. Her hard work collecting cans for the Women’s ministry earned her the title of, “Can Queen.” As a result of her generous spirit and pleasant personality, she was loved by many. Her Christian life was as beautiful as the flowers she loved so well, and her influence will forever remain in the lives of all who knew her.
She quietly transitioned into the hands of God on Friday, March 8, 2019 at Signature Healthcare, Memphis, TN. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, two husbands, siblings, J.B. Whitwell, Luther Whitwell, Reba Coply, Margaret Hinkle, Nancy Powell, Evelyn “Shug” Anderson, Irene Cavinese, family members and many friends.
Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her three daughters: Dana M. Odom, Anita Scarborough, and Carolyn M. Everhart; five granddaughters: Jennifer Denise Johnson of Signal Mtn., TN, Lindsey Jones of Hernando, MS, Erin Falconer of Hernando, MS, Marsey L. Lacher of Hattiesburg, MS and Heather Everhart of Eads, TN: eight great grandchildren; a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
