Freddie Joe Maxey, age 79, of Bartlett, Tennessee passed away on Sunday, October 17, 2021. Freddie was born November 21, 1941 in Memphis, TN. He was a graduate of Bartlett High School class of 1960 and received track scholarship offers from Wake Forest and Memphis State. Freddie started his career with the Memphis Police Department in 1965 until his retirement as Captain in 1990. During his career with the MPD he received The Police Officer of the Year, presented by the Civitan Club in 1977, and Police Officer of the Year 1980, by the Memphis Shelby County Optimist Club. After his retirement he began a career with American General Life Insurance where he was a Sales Manager and he received the National Leadership Conference and President's Trophy Award. Freddie also worked at Harrah's Casino as Lead Security Supervisor. He was a member of Bartlett Hills Baptist Church (formerly Raleigh Baptist Church).
He was preceded in death by his parents, G.B. and Bonnie Maxey, one brother, Clayton "Toby" Maxey, two sisters, Sandra Rue and Barbara Keats. Freddie is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marie Maxey, four children, Kevin Maxey, Scott Maxey, Ann Marie Hatley, Todd Maxey, four grandchildren, Peyton Maxey, Brittney Maxey, Rachel Hatley (Seth), Jacob Hatley, and one great grandson, Elijah Horton. He also leaves his brother Gary Bruce Maxey (Ellen) and a host of loving nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 12pm until service time at 2pm, on Thursday, October 21, 2021, at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 N. Germantown Parkway Bartlett, TN 38133.
Freddie loved spending time at the "Maxey Mobile Mansion" in Heber Springs, AR, located a field away from the Little Red River where he fly fished. He was very athletic, loved to run and coached track, football, baseball and basketball for Raleigh Baptist Church and Shelby Youth Sports for many years. Freddie never met a stranger and loved to help others in need.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Bartlett Hills Baptist Church or charity of the donor's choice.
