He was married on May 13, 1961 to JoAnne Gunn and lived most of his married life in the Berclair area of Memphis. In 2002 he and JoAnne moved to the “country” (Rosemark) and spent the next two decades restoring a craftsman home built in the 1930’s.
Gene had a number of jobs throughout his lifetime but the one he cherished most and flourished at was that of Deputy Sheriff for Shelby County. He thrived in that environment and retired from there when his health declined.
Gene enjoyed the outdoors and in his earlier adult life played softball on Grimes Memorial United Methodist Men’s team, went fishing, camping and canoeing. He was an accomplished “do it yourself person” and spent many hours doing repairs to the church as well.
He is survived by his wife JoAnne of 64 years, daughter Tracy Scott (Chris), son Sam Lewers (Therica), 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren who will miss “Poppie” very much.
He was predeceased by his parents Hewlett and Dorothy Lewers and daughter Rhonda McFarland.
A memorial service will be held at Memphis Funeral Home, 3700 Germantown Parkway, Bartlett, TN, on Saturday, July 19 at 10 am with visitation at 9:30. Donations in his memory can be made to St. Jude, LeBonheur Children’s Hospital, or a charity of your choice.
