Gordon Francis Pitcher Jr., 79, of Memphis, Tennessee, passed away on July 27, 2026. Born May 31, 1947, in Sharon, Connecticut, Gordon lived a life marked by steady devotion to family, to country, to work, and to the simple joys that made each day richer.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon F. Pitcher, Sr. and Mary Lee Pitcher, and his brother, William.
He is survived by his former spouse, Bessie Pitcher; his two children, Tammy Hoffmeyer and Matthew Pitcher; and a loving extended family.
His daughter, Tammy Hoffmeyer, and son-in-law, Mike Hoffmeyer, survive him along with grandchildren Katie Pitcher, Francziska Jordan, Bradley Hoffmeyer (granddaughter-in-law Sara Hoffmeyer and great-grandson Tyler Hoffmeyer), and Michael Hoffmeyer, Jr.
His son, Matthew Pitcher, survives him along with granddaughters Sage Kopke and Kayli Thorsen.
He is also survived by his brother, Tracy Pitcher; his nephew, Hunter Pitcher; and his niece, Mary Fly.
Gordon served in the United States Army and later dedicated nearly three decades of faithful service to the V.A. Hospital in Memphis, where he ultimately retired. His commitment reflected a quiet strength and a deep respect for duty—values that guided him throughout his life.
Music brought Gordon genuine comfort and joy. He especially loved “Ave Maria,” the powerful voice of Luciano Pavarotti, the stirring sound of bagpipes, and the timeless songs of Patsy Cline and Dolly Parton. He was also a devoted fan of Notre Dame athletics and the New York Giants, following them with enduring loyalty.
He cherished time spent fishing with his partner in crime, Bill Nelson, and he especially enjoyed “shooting the breeze” with his very best friend, Leon Yeager. Those friendships—and the memories made through them—were a lasting source of happiness and companionship.
Visitation will be held at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 North Germantown Parkway, Bartlett, TN 38133, on July 31, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm.
A Celebration of Life Service will follow at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens on July 31, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 2:30 pm.
A Commital Service will take place at Memory Hill Gardens, 3700 North Germantown Parkway, Bartlett, TN 38133, on July 31, 2026, from 3:00 pm to 3:30 pm.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. May his memory bring comfort and peace to those whose lives he touched.
