

Howard Raymond Paul was called to Heaven on the morning of September 27th, 2016. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Stonewall Jackson Paul and Rosa Lee Paul, and his sister, Ruby Wonda Dail. Howard is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Lurene B. Paul, two sons, Donald Howard Paul (Jennifer) and Daniel Raymond Paul, three grandchildren, Stanley William Paul (Krista), Molly Rose Paul, and Donald Howard Paul, Jr. Howard Paul is also survived by an extensive family of nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Howard was also a great-great uncle. Howard was born on January 2nd, 1925 in the city of Memphis, Tennessee. His family moved often as circumstances required to cities including Oxford, Mississippi, Marked Tree, Arkansas, and Nettleton, Arkansas, before eventually returning to Memphis, Tennessee. Howard was a veteran of World War II. One month after his nineteenth birthday, Howard received his Army Air Force pilot wings and a commission as Second Lieutenant. After receiving his pilot wings Howard served as a pilot instructor until transferred to a B-29 wing, the 315th, based on island of Guam, in the Pacific. The 315th Bomb Wing is the wing that flew the last combat mission of World War II. Howard Paul was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater medal with two battle stars, the Presidential Unit Citation and various other medals and awards. Howard Paul remained in the Air Force Reserve after World War II and was twice recalled to active duty during the Korean War and again during the Cuban missile crisis. Howard retired from the Air Force Reserve with the rank of Major and the rating of Command Pilot. Howard was an attorney and practiced law for more than forty years. He was recognized as an expert in Labor Relations Law. Howard represented labor unions, including the Teamsters and others, for more than thirty years. Howard was the first attorney to represent the union of the Memphis sanitation employees that were striking at the time. Howard was the past chairman of the Tennessee Bar Association Labor Law Section. He served on the American Bar Association Committee on the Development of Law under the National Labor Relations Act. Howard Paul was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the Fifth and Sixth Circuit Courts of Appeal, the Tennessee Supreme Court and all lower courts, as well as the National Labor Relations Board. Howard Paul was a Past Master of the Memphis Masonic Lodge #118, a ritualist in the Scottish Rite, and a Shriner. Howard was a member of Germantown Baptist Church. Howard Paul was a devoted husband and father. He always made sure that his family was cared for and loved. This was a mission in which he was totally successful. We, the surviving family members, know that Howard Raymond Paul is again enjoying his love of flying, though with heavenly wings. Howard will be missed on this earth by those of us that remain. But we wish all to know that Howard Raymond Paul’s life was full, eventful, and well lived. Howard’s love for his family, relatives and friends continues to resonate through all of us and will carry on through time. The family will receive friends from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on Friday, September 30th with the funeral service to be held at 2:00pm on October 1st, 2016. All services will be held at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens located at 3700 N. Germantown Rd., Bartlett, TN 38133.
