James Robert "Scooter" Anderson, 79, of Memphis, TN, passed away on October 5, 2026. Born on July 5, 1947, in Memphis, he was the son of the late John and Betty Anderson. Scooter was a cherished member of the Memphis community, known for his kindness, dedication to family, and entrepreneurial spirit.
Scooter graduated from Kingsbury High School in 1966 and attended Sheet Metal School. His career was cut short due to the passing of his father, a pivotal moment that led him to take over the family business, Battery Sales and Service. Under his leadership, the business expanded to include eight branches across the Southeast. He successfully ran the company until his retirement in 2019.
A veteran of the Marine Corps, Scooter served as an Air Traffic Controller and was honorably discharged in 1975 after six years of service. His commitment to his country was a significant aspect of his life.
Scooter was an avid participant in the drag racing community as a member of the NHRA in the Super Stock Class. He raced alongside his late son, Kelly Anderson, achieving numerous national event wins. After retiring from racing in 2003, Scooter took great pleasure in showing his prized Chevy cars, garnering several awards for his efforts.
He was a devout member of St. James Catholic Church.
Scooter is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Judy Cooper-Sciara; daughter, Angel Anderson Gass; son-in-law, William David Gass; grandchildren, Aniston Kella Gass, Zian James Gass, and Mazzy Nora Gass; sister, Jerry Ross; brother, Joe Anderson; sister-in-law, Mary Anderson; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Kelly Brian Anderson, and sister Margie Floyd.
Visitation will be held on October 23, 2026, from 5-7 PM at Memphis Funeral Home, 3700 North Germantown Road, Bartlett, TN. A funeral service will take place on October 24, 2026, at 12 PM at St. James Catholic Church 4180 Leroy Ave Memphis, TN followed by burial at Memphis Funeral Home.
