

John was born on July 12, 1938 in St. Louis, MO. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and from Officer’s Candidate School in Newport, RI. He served in the United States Navy for 20 years, receiving multiple commendations and retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. John’s family accompanied him to duty stations around the country and abroad. After retirement from the Navy, John worked for the Memphis City Schools.
John enjoyed working with his mind and hands. He built model train layouts, and enjoyed puzzles and Lego. He worked as a carpenter in his youth and continued building throughout his life. In his later years, he was an avid woodworker, creating “useful items that might look okay,” which were beautiful functional housewares and fiber arts tools. In the last two years his focus turned to purely decorative wooden art.
John “Jack” Schneider is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Frances; his parents Harold and Mildred Schneider of St. Louis, MO, and his brother Carl Schneider of St. Louis, MO.
John is survived by his daughter Angela Schneider of Bartlett, TN, and his daughter and son-in-law Robin and Thomas Ligon and granddaughter Keira Ligon of Hernando, MS.
Memorials may be made to Every Child’s Hope in St. Louis, MO.
A visitation with the family will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m on Friday, April 18, 2025 at Memphis Funeral Home in Bartlett, TN, with a memorial service to follow at 2 p.m.
A committal service with military honors will be held at a later date at the West Tennessee Veteran’s Cemetery in Memphis, TN.
