Joseph Owen Spuryer—affectionately known to many as Big Joe, Papa Joe, Paw Paw, or Grandfather—has passed away, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and dedicated service. He was born to the late Mitchell and Viola Spuryer.
A man of faith, Joe loved Jesus Christ with all his heart. His strong faith anchored his life, shaping the way he loved his family, served his country, and treated every person he met with grace and kindness.
A proud veteran, Joe served as a Lance Corporal and demolition engineer in the United States Marine Corps. He bravely fought in the Vietnam War, earning a Purple Heart for his sacrifice. While deployed, his heart remained at home; he frequently wrote letters on scraps of paper, cardboard, or whatever he could find to the love of his life, Paula. Upon his return to the States, the two were wed, beginning a beautiful marriage that spanned over 58 years. Joe’s devotion was unmatched—while continuing his military service in North Carolina, he would hitchhike home on weekends just to treasure four or five fleeting hours with his new bride.
Following his honorable discharge, Joe returned to Memphis, Tennessee, where he shared his brilliant mechanical talents as a ride mechanic at Libertyland for over 20 years.
Big Joe had a tender heart and truly never met a stranger. He was effortlessly goofy, funny, and uniquely famous for speaking Donald Duck fluently. He loved life's simple pleasures, especially spending time with his son, his grandchildren, and his extended hobby shop family. Together, they spent countless hours racing RC and slot cars, painting model figures, and trading collectibles. He also spent years traveling far and wide with his son and the BMX team, forging lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories along the way.
Joe’s warmth and spirit live on through his family. He is survived by his two children, Joseph Owen Spuryer, Jr. and Marie Spuryer; his three cherished grandchildren, Joseph Owen Spuryer III, Jordan Elizabeth Spuryer, and Axel Owen Spuryer; and his beloved wife, Paula
