

Joe York: philanthropist, life- long learner, scholar, ordained Christian minister, historian, educator, loyal Kappa Sigma Fraternity alumnae and lover of all things Dachshund.
Joe was born 10/13/1944 the son of Ora Stafford York and the Rev. Benjamin P. York in Memphis, TN. He was raised in Bartlett, TN, and educated in the public school system.
He received a B.A. in History and Political Science with minors in English and Foreign Languages in 1966 from Lambuth University, Jackson, TN. Graduate degrees include four Masters Degrees from University of Memphis, American Public University and American Military University. He was also an All but Dissertation, Doctor of English Education from the University of Memphis.
His career was as an educator: Southwest TN Community College, Shelby State Community College, Jackson State Community College, University of Memphis, and in the public schools, Whitehaven, Fayette-Ware, and Millington High Schools.
Joe was honored as the National Teacher of the Year for Tennessee, in 1991; he was inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame, and received a National Educator Award, and other awards too numerous to mention.
All through his life he lived with a servant’s heart, volunteering and serving in various organizations: Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue, National Teachers’ Hall of Fame, Bartlett Historical Society, Bartlett Animal Commission and Bartlett Education Foundation.
His generosity was legendary. If you needed anything he was there for you. Joseph York’s legacy is one of kindness, love, and service all tempered with a wicked sense of humor. He passed away April 12, 2025, with his Dachshund, Longstreet, by his side. He was 80 years young. As per his wishes, there will be no funeral or service.
