She was born in Greenwood Mississippi on November 12, 1929, the daughter of Charles and Ethel Simmons. She graduated from Nicholas Blackwell High School in 1947 and for a number of years worked at Sears & Roebuck, doing various jobs that included working at the candy store and later designing and drafting kitchen interiors. Later, she married Aubrey Horne and was married for over 37 years.
She and Aubrey owned and operated a salvage and hardware store in Brunswick, TN for 10 years where they became connected to many people in the area. In 1984 after Aubrey passed away, she served as a Pink Lady Volunteer at Methodist Hospitals, serving Hospital staff and patients. She also served at Theater Memphis as a seamstress, volunteering her sewing skills in the costume shop. Additionally she was a committed member in the Body of Christ, attending and serving at New Salem Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Central North Church and lastly Harvest Christian Fellowship Church.
Martha could be found most days in her garden where she grew a variety of flowers and greenery to enhance her home. It was also a joy of hers to share these flowers with friends and family.
Martha is survived by her children: David Horne (Julia), Mary Ellen Ryon, and John Horne (Kim),sister: Donna Wooddell ,grandchildren: Sara Baxter (Gibb), Jill Horne, Wendy Echeverria (Eddie), Emily Daniels ( Adam), Sam Horne, Josh Horne and Nathan Horne, great grandchildren: Eddie Echeverria (Hannah), Joey Echeverria, Diego Echeverria, Aubrey Echeverria, Livyah Echeverria, Eli Daniels, and Susie Daniels, great-great grandson Henry Echeverria, and treasured relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by the love of her life – her husband Aubrey, her parents (Charles and Ethel Simmons), brothers Bill, Charles, and Gene Simmons, sister Melba Mann and her son-in-law David Ryon.
A gathering of family and friends for Martha will be held Thursday, January 5, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Harvest Christian Fellowship Church, 5959 Airline Rd, Arlington, TN 38002. A celebration of life service will be held Friday, January 6, 2023 at 11:00 AM,at Harvest Christian Fellowship Church, 5959 Airline Rd, Arlington, TN 38002. A committal service will follow at New Salem Presbyterian Cemetery, 6813 Salem RD, Lakeland, TN 38002.
