Nita Gwen Mayo

September 21, 1943June 22, 2020

Nita Gwen Mayo, age 76, of Memphis passed away on June 22, 2020, in Escondido, California. A grave-side service will be held for family and friends at Memory Hills Gardens Cemetery in Bartlett, Tennessee on Saturday, July 11, 2020, at 2:00 PM. Memphis Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Nita was born in Memphis to William (Bill) L. Mayo and Ruth (Jerry) S. Mayo on September 21, 1943. Nita is preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Jerry, and her sister Betty Jo. Nita lived with her niece, Lisa Balton, in Memphis, her nephew, Troy Metts, in Loganville, Georgia, and most recently with her nephew, Michael Metts, in Vista, California. Developmentally disabled from birth, Nita enjoyed NASCAR, sports, square dancing, intricate puzzles, Uno and other card games, and taking the occasional excursion or two. Nita loved Elvis Presley, and always began to sing and dance to his music. Nita was the most loving person ever, never meeting a stranger in her life. Nita loved animals, wanting to hug and kiss all she met. She always wanted to hold your hand, constantly kissing your hand and telling you that she loved you. She was truly an innocent soul, bringing joy to everyone she encountered. In California, Nita was accepted into the San Diego Regional Center, a program for developmentally challenged adults. Nita developed many lasting friendships, participating in the many activities and field trips with her friends. Everyone she met felt the hand of God working through her, blessing all that knew her, and we all miss her typically southern way, laughter, and genuine love and caring for everyone. “Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5, 15-16
