Murphy’s Law states that “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong." Rann liked to joke that Rushing’s Law was “Murphy was an optimist.” However, the way he went about life seeking to lift up his family and friends was anything but pessimistic.
Rann Rushing was born April 25, 1947, in Vallejo, California. He grew up in several cities owing to his father’s Navy career. After high school Rann went into the Navy where he served two years aboard the USS Putnam, and followed that by moving to Memphis and graduating from the University of Memphis. He worked at FedEx for three decades, traveling around the world in the international finance division, and later lived in São Paulo, Brazil, and Miami for the company. He was able to visit dozens of amazing cities worldwide and work with so many wonderful people. Following retirement he settled in Jeffersonville, Indiana to be close to family, all of whom were his pride and joy.
Rann loved his family immensely. He was a generous person with his time and resources as he took his family on trips around the country and the world to experience new and wonderful things, such as following the Red Sox to as many different ballparks as possible, traveling Europe, or taking Caribbean cruises. Every summer he would take his children and their families to a new location around the country and it brought him great joy to have everyone together.
A near-perfect day for him in retirement was spending time with his grandchildren, seeing a movie with his children, taking everyone to a new restaurant, and then watching his favorite teams play.
He passed away in Memphis on March, 13, 2023, visiting some of his family on vacation as he so loved doing.
Rann is survived by his sister, Ellie Mae Lollar, his son, Scott Rushing (Emily Holladay), his son, Jeffrey Rushing (Valerie), his daughter, Stacy Yates (James), his daughter, Stephanie Lucas (William), five grandchildren, Gabriel, Nathaniel, Cooper, Penelope, and Franklin, and his dog, Duke. Rann is preceded in death by his beloved mother, Sarah Frances Rushing, and his father, Jesse Levi Rushing.
There will be a private visitation and in accordance with his wishes Rann will be cremated. His children and their families will spread his ashes in the same place as his mom’s in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia.
