Roy Holmes, Jr, 93 of Memphis passed away Thursday, June 11, 2015. He was born May 3, 1922 to Roy and Katie Holmes in Skullbone, Tennessee. Mr. Holmes was retired from Mapco Refinery, was an avid Christian and longtime member of Cherokee Baptist Church-Memphis, a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II in Okinawa, Japan and Leyte Island, Philippines where he received two purple hearts and a bronze star. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Sharon Holmes; and is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Margie D. Holmes; son, Barry Holmes of Memphis; and his brother, Albert H. Holmes of Skullbone, Tennessee. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time at 2:00 p.m., Monday, June 15, 2015 at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 N. Germantown Road, Bartlett, Tennessee with the interment to follow at Memphis Memory Gardens, 6444 Raleigh LaGrange Rd with military honors to be rendered. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be sent to the Wounded Warrior Project.
