Susan was born in El Paso, Texas on May 19, 1945, one of two children born to the late Gilbert & Marguerite Appler. She graduated high school from Huntsville High School in Huntsville, Alabama class of 1963. She then graduated from Newberry College in Columbia, South Carolina in 1967 with a Bachelor's Degree.
She married Philip R. Hugel, IV on June 10, 1967. They lived in several places until finally settling in Bartlett, Tennessee in 1982. She taught high school French and English at Kirby & Bolton High Schools. She was a member and President of the Shelby County Education Association. During her teaching career she led many student groups to and through Europe.
Susan was always very active in her church life including youth events and the Handbell Choir.
Along with her parents Mrs. Hugel was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Philip R. Hugel, IV; and her brother Colonel (Ret) Donald E. Appler.
She is survived by her daughter Beth (Richard) Majkrzak of Collierville, Tennessee; grandsons Carter and Erek Majkrzak of Collierville; sister-in-law Carolyn Appler of North Carolina, two nieces Adrienne Appler (Jeremy) of Wisconsin, and Valerie Appler of North Carolina; and King Louis the Cat.
