Tom was born on July 23, 1940, in Ironton, MO. Being 9 years younger than his three siblings, he was affectionately deemed a "spoiled little boy." Moving to Park City, UT he found an increased love of downhill and cross-country skiing. While riding his horse, Sojourner, fueled his fancying of himself as a "horseman.” During his 29-year marriage to Candy, they enjoyed swing-dancing, bicycling, "occasional" scuba diving, and Unitarianism. As a life-long Democrat, Tom served on multiple committees for the Democratic Party of Memphis, TN. An avid reader, he enjoyed Louis L'Amour, Ken Follett, and Shakespeare.
Tom earned his Bachelor's and Masters of Science in Physics from The University of Missouri’s School of Mines and Metallurgy in Rolla, MO through a full-ride swimming scholarship, and, later in his life, was inducted into MENSA International. Tom worked as a Systems Engineer for IBM in Chicago, IL and then for UCC in Dallas, TX and Manhattan, NY. He then became a Banking Software Consultant with First Tennessee Bank Memphis and SCI Corporation, Ontario, Canada.
