

Vernon “Pop” Long, 80, of Lakeland, passed away on Friday, December 19, 2014. He is preceded in death by, his parents, L.G., Sr. and Susie Hughes Long, and siblings, Rudolph Long, L.G. Long, Jr. and Maggie Dew. Mr. Long is survived by; his loving wife of 49 years, Jan Holley Long, children, Les Long (Linda), V. Russell Long (Beverly), Vickie Sutphin (Tommy), Cheryl Lynn Burnette, and Tim Long, grandchildren, Brandon Long (Amy), Suzanne Holloway (Mark), Timothy Long (Lorin), Sherrie Mitchell (Mike), Dr. Micah Long (Audra), Dalton Burnette, Jacob Burnette, Austin Burnette, James Long, Cody Long and Amber Long, 14 great-grandchildren, a sister, Dorothy Stewart, and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Long was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He served proudly in the US Marine Corp for two years and was wounded in the Korean War. He served as a Deacon at Elliston Baptist Church. Not only did he love to hunt and fish, but also loved to ride motorcycles. He was often found tinkering or Barbequing. The family will receive friends and relatives on Monday, December 22nd from 6-8pm at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 N. Germantown Rd. The funeral will be held on Tuesday at 12pm also at the funeral home. The interment will be on Wednesday at 10am at Memorial Park Southwoods, 5485 Hacks Cross Rd. Memphis.
