William Clayton Adams (aka Bill) of Memphis Tennessee died peacefully on Saturday, January 28, 2023, after an extended illness. Born in Wildersville TN, William was the oldest child of Alton and Beulah Adams. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Donna Roberts Adams; daughter Cindy Miller (Tim); grandsons Winston (Christina) and Clayton Miller; sister Ann Thornton (Bobby); Ann’s daughter Amy Cox (Dwayne); and Amy’s daughters Katie (Harrison) and Maggie (Jackson).
William worked at Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) his entire career, and retired after 39 ½ years of service. During that time, he rose from Customer Service Representative to lead several key departments and ultimately to manage two different Service Centers with over 400 employees each. At MLGW, Bill formed lifelong friendships and was known and respected throughout the organization. Even years after his retirement he was remembered fondly by many.
Alongside his career at MLGW, Bill’s avocation in life was construction. He and Donna owned and operated multiple rental properties for over 30 years and continued to invest in real estate into their 80’s. William’s almost limitless skills in building and repair, combined with his passion for problem solving, made him the ultimate Handy Man. His other hobbies included golf, reading, ping-pong, and pool.
However, Bill’s real passion in life was always his family, especially his wife Donna and his grandson’s Winston and Clayton. He will be fondly remembered for his dry wit and his love of a good time. William was a member of Germantown Church of Christ for more than 40 years.
Funeral services will be held at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 N Germantown Pkwy, on Friday, February 3, 2023, at 2pm with visitation beginning at 1pm. Interment will follow immediately at Memorial Gardens adjacent to the funeral home.
