Born October 11, 1931 – Died December 8, 2022
After a 91-year journey that took him from England to Canada to the United States, William Henry McLoughlin (Bill) passed away on December 8, 2022. He was born October 11, 1931 to Lawrence McLoughlin and Cecilia Bullen in Wallasey, with family and ancestry in Ireland.
World War II left England devastated, so Bill searched for greater opportunity in Canada and in the weeks following his marriage to Shirley Skillen, boarded a ship with his bride to emigrate to Montreal, Canada in 1955.
In 1967 Bill’s family had grown with his wife and five children and they moved to Milan, Tennessee. Bill had learned electronics serving in the Royal Air Force in Britain and brought that knowledge to Northern Electric in Canada and then to ITT in Milan. He was recognized by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers in 1977. He was promoted in ITT to the position of Director of Quality until his retirement in 1987. He continued other jobs until 1993.
Bill was a devoted Catholic, never missing Mass even on the family’s many camping trips. He was an active member of the men’s Catholic charity the Knights of Columbus. He coached soccer, taught Judo, loved to sail and was active in the Senior Olympics. He could fix anything and had knowledge of history, geography and science. He earned a college degree and was a member of Mensa and Intertel, remaining mentally and physically active until he passed.
Bill loved his family dearly. He was a devoted husband and attentive father. He leaves behind a wife of 67 years (Shirley), 5 children, Janice Olswing (Barry), Kathleen Kenwright (William), Michael McLoughlin (Mary), Stephen McLoughlin (Essie), Peter McLoughlin (Melanie). In addition, he had 15 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.
Although Bill will be dearly missed, his fortitude and legacy lives on in his children and their children.
