ROBERT WILTON HAZELWOOD, 72, went to be with the Lord in the early morning of November 23, 2013. Since having pancreatic cancer and a broken hip in 2003, he has endured many maladies, but he never let his illnesses keep him from enjoying life. Indeed, to the very end, he reached out to everyone he met, including visitors at the hospital and the staff that cared for him, showing an interest in their lives and making them feel special.
Wilton was born in Marietta, Georgia and attended Presbyterian College in South Carolina. He was a Captain in the Army with the Medical Service Corps in both Germany and Vietnam. Afterwards he moved to Memphis where he was a purchasing agent for several Memphis companies. He was an active member of Second Presbyterian church, serving as an elder and children’s Sunday School teacher for many years. In his spare time he enjoyed working in his shop and obviously inherited his father’s talent for woodworking.
He leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Sandy, whom he loved passionately. He was all about family. He was proud of and loved deeply all of his three children and their spouses: Leslie Kuhn (Eckehard), Michele Koehler (Kirk) and Scott Hazelwood (Monica) as well as his grandchildren: Alex Koehler, Ashley Koehler, Corinna Kuhn and Abigail Hazelwood. He is also survived by his brothers Terry Hazelwood and Howard Hazelwood, both of Memphis.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the Neighborhood Christian Center or to the Caring Department of Second Presbyterian Church.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 26 at 10 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. in the Sanctuary of Second Presbyterian Church, 4055 Poplar Avenue, Memphis TN 38111.
