Sybil Lajuana Cocke at 98 and a half years old died on September 22nd, 2019 at her life-long home in Bartlett, Texas. She was born in Bartlett on April 4th 1921 or as she liked to say 4-4-21, the third child of Alvin Leath and Ruth Griffin. She attended grammar school in Academy and Bartlett, TX and High School in the latter. In her teenage years she was a champion checker player - going undefeated. She married Jesse Cocke of Dunbar, OK on June 21st, 1940 and her marriage lasted 70 years until his death, on December 30th, 2010. Sybil was a caring homemaker that raised three sons: Jesse Cocke Jr, David Leath Cocke and Dennis Cooke. She frequently served as home room sponsor for all her children in their school years and volunteered often for supporting the elderly at the Will-O-Bell Nursing Home. She worked tirelessly to get her sons higher education degrees. Sybil got a certification in cosmetology and opened a beauty salon, Sybil’s Beauty Salon, in Bartlet. Sybil was an extraordinary country and western dancer, dancing until well into her late 80’s, every Sunday at Sefcik Hall in Seaton, TX and to her last days was proud of her dance moves which she demonstrated often to her family and doctors. She was an extraordinary cook, candy, and pie maker. She is a member of The Order of the Eastern Star and the First Methodist Church of Bartlett. Throughout her life, she loved to travel and sightsee in Europe and across the US. In her later years she received excellent in-home care from her caretaker, Bea Herrera of Bartlett who was with her at her death. Sybil was preceded in death by her parents, Alvin Leath Griffin and Ruth Griffin of Bartlett, husband Jesse Cocke Sr of Bartlett, two brothers J. D. Griffin of Holland, TX, and Marvin Griffin of Bartlett, two sisters Hazel (Griffin) Stewart (1935) of Austin and Mary Ellen Seale of Jourdanton, TX, and her eldest son Jesse Cocke Jr. of Stephenville, TX. She is survived by her remaining sons, David Leath Cocke of Temple, TX and Dennis Farrell Cooke of China Springs, TX, Jesse Cocke Jr’s wife Shirley Cocke, and three grandchildren: Heather Weihausen of Groesbeck, TX, Camron McDonald of Los Angeles, CA, and Travis Cooke of Waco, TX and 3 great grandchildren, Chloe Weihausen, Colby Weihausen, and Rowan McDonald.
