John D. “Johnny Chicago” Ellis Sr., 73, of Bartonville, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at Unity Point\Methodist Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 27, 1944 in Chicago, Illinois to Dean H. and Mary Jane (Switzer) Ellis. He married Patricia A. DeJaynes on April 4, 1964 in Peoria. She survives. He is also survived by two children, Carol (Craig) Opper and Johnny (Jennifer) Ellis Jr. both of Bartonville; five grandchildren, Alexa and Morgan Ellis, Joseph and Jacob Opper and Cameron Ellis; one sister, Velma Ellis of Chicago, two brothers, Terry Ellis of Palm Desert, California and Tony Ellis of Las Vegas, Nevada and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Linda Ayalan. John was a truck driver for over 40 years working out of Teamsters #627 of which he was a member, retiring September 1, 2007. He worked over 20 of those years for R.A. Cullinan and Sons. He was a snowplow operator since 1978 having residential and commercial accounts in the Peoria area. He loved watching NASCAR and gardening. He always was there to help friends and family. John enjoyed riding his Harley, spending time at his son’s automobile garage and working on cars. He also loved his dog, Willy. Funeral services will be Monday, September 11, 2017 at 10 am at the Davison Fulton Bartonville Chapel. The Rev. Jack Thompson will officiate. Visitation will be from 2pm until 5pm Sunday at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in the Springdale Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Midwest Affiliate. WHAT A GREAT FRIEND JOHN HAS BEEN FOR QUITE A FEW YEARS. CALLED EACH OTHER MOST NIGHT FOR YEARS.

ANY TIME I NEEDED HELP...........JOHN JUMPED.

WE WERE TRUE FRIENDS.

WHEN WE MOVED TO MICHIGAN 6 YRS AGO JOHN AND PAT FOLLOWED US IN THEIR CAMPER. LUCKY FOR ME JOHN HOOKED UP OUR WASHER AND DRYER AFTER THE UNLOADERS LEFT. CAME BACK TO VISIT THAT 4TH OF JULY.

NEVER HAD A FRIEND LIKE HIM.

SURE WILL MISS HIS TRUE FRIENDSHIP AND HIS
PHONE CALLS.

Yesterday as i was reading the morning paper i opened the obit section just as i do every day to check and see if anyone had passed that i knew and much to my shock the man who i considered my dearest friend for so many many years put a loss in my heart that i haven't felt since i lost my father..To the Ellis family my wife and i want to express our deepest sorrow for your loss. I know that i will miss him tremendously as one man who can only miss his best friend. Good bye my friend and it has been my privilage to have been acquainted with you for over 45 years..May God give you peace and justice as you well deserve......Not gonna be the same now that i cant call you nor can you call me.if nothing else just to chit chat...Your friend forever...Bob (and Eula) Mc Manus...............
