Ray was born at home in Hanna City on April 10, 1927, to George and Johannah (Fischer) Hammerich. He grew up in the countryside alongside his twin brother, Raymond, where they developed a lifelong love for the outdoors and hard work.
Ray spent his life farming and working as a carpenter. He raised dairy cattle, livestock, and crops, and over the years, built numerous homes and completed countless carpentry projects for family and friends.
Ray married the love of his life, Mary Lou VanDettum, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded by his parents, his twin brother Raymond, sister Louella Evans, and a beloved grandson, Brandon Gibbons.
He is survived by his two daughters, Caryn (Bob) Alonzo and Janice (Ted) Gibbons; his granddaughter, Paige Gibbons; sister-in-law, Lois Chitwood; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Glasford, with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. Pastor Raymond Barclay will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery.
