I fell in love with Sara in what felt like a complete whirlwind. She had the charm of a boy from a brat pack movie, and I was completely smitten. She was smart, made me laugh harder than anybody else could, and understood that the things that made life beautiful were very simple and sweet. She loved her friends, making people laugh, photography, music, learning, cooking, and video games. She was always there for you and would stop at nothing to brighten your day. She made me understand and experience the world around me in a more beautiful and rich way. She was the Ernie to my Bert.
Sara was a teacher, and she taught me every day I spent with her. It was a love language for her, to help other people see the world in a new way. I had the gift of having the chance to read her writing, and it changed the way I see the landscape of Illinois. Her words echo around me everywhere I look. It is an honor to carry that with me.
I feel very privileged to have known Sara so deeply and so tenderly. Her handprint will be on my heart forever.

To Sara’s family and friends,

I’m so sorry for your loss. As one of her advisors in the English department at the University of Illinois I enjoyed getting to know Sara over the last three years. She was thoughtful, smart, and kind, and she would have been a wonderful teacher. I’ll miss her personally, and I also know that the department as a whole is mourning the loss of a valuable member of our community, someone who enhanced every group she was a part of just by being her own individual and creative self. You have my deepest condolences, and I’ll be sure to keep her in memory in the years to come.

Dear Hetzel Family,

Ms. Hetzel was a student observer in our English classes at Central High School. We are so sorry for your loss. She cared about our class, even in this weird virtual year. We have memories of working one-on-one with Ms. Hetzel in breakout rooms. She was really sweet and nice. She would have been an incredible teacher. We are grateful for the time we spent together. We are sending you all of our love during this sad time. Please know you are in our hearts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Ms. Dittmer, Mrs. Knowles, Ms. Delahanty, and the 9th and 11th grade English classes at Central High School

I just got an email an hour ago about Sara. I'm so sickened to hear that she's gone. Sara was a student in my Creative Writing class at U. of I. last semester, and what an amazing writer she was! I told her several times how talented she was. Her knack for crafting such memorable moods in her stories and poems stood out to me, even though she rarely spoke in class, and hated being on camera on Zoom. She wrote about being a DJ for the student radio station, Pizza-FM, and about eating honey crisp apples in her hometown. A very memorable girl. I'm heartbroken that she's no longer on the planet with us. Hope to see her again one day and give her a hug.
