Born and raised in Sandy Ridge, North Carolina, Gloria later made her home in Bassett, Virginia. She worked for many years at DuPont, where she was known for her strong work ethic and determination.
Gloria was of the Christian faith. She will be remembered for her love of family and animals, her independent spirit, determination, lifelong love of music, and joy of dancing.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ruby Amos; her husband, Roger Lacy Whorley; her son, Dale Whorley; her granddaughter, Lindsay Whorley; her great-grandson, Ryland Whorley; and her special friend, Robert Tatum.
Gloria is survived by her son, Donald Whorley and his wife, Shirley; Donald's sons, Douglas Whorley and Dustin Whorley and his wife, Tiffany; and Dale's children, Melissa Hale, Kendall Mitchem and her husband, Billy, and Taylor Whorley and his wife, Kim. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Brayden Hale, Shawn Mitchem, Bailey Mitchem, McKenzie Whorley, Rylee Whorley, and Kyson Whorley.
Services for Gloria will be held on Tuesday, August 11, 2026 at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home, 30 Riverside Drive, Bassett, Virginia 24055. The visitation will begin at 10:00 AM. The funeral service will be at 11:00 AM with Shaun Draughn conducting. Interment will follow at Whorley Cemetery, Johnnys Ridge Road, Ferrum, Virginia 24088.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the SPCA of Martinsville & Henry County, 132 Joseph Martin Hwy, Martinsville, Virginia 24112, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
The family would like to thank the staff of Mulberry Creek Nursing and Rehab Center, Sovah Health Martinsville, LewisGale Medical Center, and Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care for the care and compassion shown to Gloria and her family.
