

Hewlus Arthur Martin, of Collinsville, Virginia passed away peacefully on November 21, 2014 at home with his loving family. The son of the late Abner Dallas and Martha Lou Stone Martin, he was born on November 9, 1926, in the Fairy Dale Community of Patrick County, Virginia. Brothers Posey, Harry, and Curtis Martin preceded him in death. Hewlus was survived by his wife of 58 years, Verona Turner Martin, daughter Beth Martin Deal and husband John of Charlotte, North Carolina, and son Barry Martin of Collinsville, Virginia. He was affectionately known as Poppy by his two grandsons, Travis R. Deal of Atlanta, Georgia, and Brendan R. Deal of Davidson, North Carolina. He was also survived by his sister Ida G. Martin of Bassett, Virginia, two nephews, and five nieces.
Hewlus was employed for thirty-seven years in the Financial Services industry. He began his career as a bookkeeper at First National Bank of Bassett; he was later promoted to branch manager and Vice President at First Bassett Bank and Trust Collinsville branch, holding that position for twenty-five years. He retired in 1991 from Dominion Bank. Hewlus served his community through the Lion’s Club, Fieldale- Collinsville Booster Club, United Fund, and Habitat for Humanity. Additionally, he was a long time member of Fieldale United Methodist Church where he served as Financial Secretary for forty-four years, as well as, service on various committees and church repair projects. Hewlus proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict.
After his retirement, Hewlus enjoyed many home projects and outdoor activities such as gardening, fishing, and hiking around Fairystone Park. He especially enjoyed hiking to White Falls and his “old home place” with his son and grand-dogger, Lucky. He spent many weekends watching his grandsons play basketball, soccer, baseball, and tennis and sharing gardening advice with his daughter. Of late, he enjoyed spending time with his couch companion Rocky.
Hewlus will be remembered as a loving husband, supportive father, and devoted grandfather. His many years of community service are much appreciated, as well as, his kind heart and integrity.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105, or Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 18981 Jeb Stuart Hwy, Stuart, VA 24171.

Collins-McKee- Stone Funeral Homes is serving the family. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, November 24th with the service following at 11 a.m. at Collins Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at Roselawn Burial Park.
