

John Martin, Jr., 88, of 87 Burroughs White Street in Collinsville, died Thursday, March 3, 2011 at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. He was born in Lee County, Virginia on September 16, 1922 to John Martin, Sr. and Nancy Wright Martin. He served in the Navy during WW II and later served in the Army in the 82nd Airborne. He retired from Virginia-Carolina Freight Lines where he was a mechanic. He was a member of Amazing Grace Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon and was also a graduate of Temple Baptist Bible Institute.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Gay Marcum Martin; three sisters, Eva Martin, Esta Gilman and Irene Evans; six brothers, Earl, George, Albert, Henry, Verna and Ira Martin.
Mr. Martin is survived by his wife, Marie Manuel Martin of the residence, one daughter, Drema M. Greer and husband, Archie of Collinsville; one son, Barry Martin and wife Tammy of Henry; one sister, Ethel Martin of Bassett; one step-daughter, Christina Williams of Martinsville; one step-son, William (Billy) Stone of Martinsville; one grandchild, Kimberly Greer Goard; one great-grandchild, Nicholas Brian-Luke Goard; three step-grandchildren, Hannah and Joseph Williams and Steven Priest; one step-great –grandchild, Braydon Priest.
The funeral service will be held Sunday, March 6, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Amazing Grace Baptist church with Pastor Greg Hodges officiating. Interment will follow in Henry Memorial Park with military honors by the Martinsville-Henry County Veterans Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Bassett and other times at the home of his daughter, Drema Greer, 100 Homestead Trail in Collinsville.
