Judith Ann Smith Mays

Judith Ann Smith Mays, of Bassett, Virginia, passed peacefully into the presence of her Lord, on July 18, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on July 25, 1942, in Martinsville, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Algie Smith and Grace Newman Smith.

Judy was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and faithful friend. She shared 63 years of love and partnership with her husband, Paul Wayne Mays, building a home where family and commitment were at the center. Her greatest joy came from caring for those she loved and bringing family together for holidays, celebrations, and everyday moments that became lasting memories.

She is lovingly survived by her husband, Paul Wayne Mays; her devoted children, Daryl Douglas Mays and his wife, Kerri Handy Mays; Gary Lee Mays; and Keith Duane Mays; her cherished grandchildren, Mason Mays (Katie), Morgan Mays Cockerham (Josh), Erin Mays Latimer (Rashawn), and Corey Mays; her dear great-grandchildren, Slate Mays, Sarah Mays, Harper Cockerham, Holly Cockerham, Reign Latimer, and Rashawn Latimer, Jr; her beloved brother, William "Bill" Smith and his wife, Jean Smith; and many extended family members and long-time friends.

As a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Bassett for over 55 years, Judy lived her Christian faith through acts of service. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, organizing special occasions, and staying engaged with current events. Her legacy lives on through the family she cherished and the countless lives she touched.

The family extends its gratitude to the caregivers of King's Grant Retirement Community and Mountain Valley Hospice for the care and kindness they provided during Judy's final days.

A celebration of Judy's life will be held at Collins Funeral Home, 30 Riverside Hwy, Bassett, Virginia at 10:00 AM Thursday, July 23, 2026 with Reverend Doug Ramsey officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at Roselawn Burial Park.
