

Born in Bassett, VA, on May 22, 1932, she was a daughter of the late Jesse James Cox and Mary Alice Wright Cox. Also preceding her in death were her brothers George C. Cox (the late Irene), Robert A. Cox (Myrtle) and Jesse Cox, Jr., her sisters Minnie Cox Edmonds (the late Richard) Lois Cox, and an infant sister, and her nephews Steven Cox (Penny) and R. King Cox. Her husband Clarence R. Hopkins passed away on Thursday, August 21, 2014.
She was a longtime member of Blackberry Baptist Church. Retired for many years from Fieldcrest Mills, she was very active in gardening, a member of the Garden Club and the American Rose Society where she achieved rank of Consulting Rosarian. She was also active in the local Red Hat Ladies group. In 2013 she was named Honoree of the Patrick Henry Allied Families Association.
Surviving are her daughters Cindy Purdy (Gary), Shirley Hopkins (Dave Thompson), and Carol Hopkins Lanham, brother C. Ervin Cox (Freda), sisters Vera Cox Rogers (James) and Hazel Cox Norman (Buddy), grandchildren Josh R. Purdy (Angela), Sara Purdy Hester (Josh), Marilyn Diane McAllister (Kerri) , Ryan N. Carter and Robin M. Carter, great-grandchildren Angelina, Christina, and Brianna Hester, Gavin and Carol McAllister, and Emily Pittman.
The funeral service will be held at 11 A.M. Friday, August 22, 2014, at Blackberry Baptist Church with her grandson, Josh Purdy, minister at Seaford Church of Christ in Seaford, VA officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park, Martinsville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cox Family Cemetery Fund, % Vera Cox Dionne, 806 Jefferson Circle, Martinsville, VA 24112.
