She was born in Stokes County, NC, February 8, 1917, a daughter of the late Trudie Fulcher Grogan and Terry Frank Grogan Sr. Also preceding Marie in death was her husband, Charles Eugene (Gene) Clay, a sister, Leila Grogan, and brothers, Carl Melvin Grogan and Troy Wilfred Grogan.
She worked at Nathan’s Department Store and Elwood’s Clothing Store for thirty-two years retiring in 1985. She was a charter member of Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church where she was a member of the WMU, the Shawl Ministry, and the Pocahontas Senior Adults. She had been a member of the Pocahontas Bible Class and Tape Ministry Committee. Marie was a charter member of the Town and Country Garden Club and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Also she was a 1934 graduate of Bassett High School where she played basketball. Friends remember her for her 21 day sweet cucumber pickles.
Surviving is her daughter, Mrs. Paul (Pat) Ross of Bassett; her son, Charles Michael (Mike) Clay and his wife, Judy Lawrence Clay of Blackstone; a sister, Virginia Grogan Padgett of Baltimore, MD; a brother, Terry Frank Grogan Jr. of Cantonment, FL; five grandchildren, Anne Marie Ross Freeman, Fran Ross Snead, Kirsten Clay McCormick, Sarah Clay Fitzgerald, Charles Michael Clay II; eight great-grandchildren, Robert S. "Rob" Jordan, Taylor Freeman, Rebecca McCcormick, Leighanne McCormick, Koty Fitzgerald, Kaleb Fitzgerald, Kasey Fitzgerald, and Caitlyn Clay; caregivers, Sandra Hairston, Joanna Rogers, Ester Vaughn, and Teresa Barbour.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, October 13, 2010, at Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Hewitt and the Rev. Brian Nott officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to the Bassett Historical Center Building Fund, 3964 Fairystone Park Highway or Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church Missions Programs, P.O. Box 507, Bassett, VA, 24055.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home, Bassett.
