

Born in Radford, June 14, 1929, she was a daughter of the late William Paul Lucas and Stella Altizer Lucas. Also preceding her in death was her son, Hugh Timothy (Timmy) Draper in 1966, her husband, Hugh Dyer Draper in 2008, and a sister, Catherine L. Goad.
Mary was a 1946 graduate of Radford High School, a 1950 graduate of Radford College where she was the editor of the college newspaper, and she was a business teacher for 36 years, retiring from Bassett High School in 1991. She was a very active member of Bassett Memorial United Methodist Church, was a member of the United Methodist Women, and was a lay speaker for the United Methodist Church. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and Women’s Aglow. Mary was also an author, having written several articles for the Martinsville Bulletin, and also a special book entitled “A Bandage On My Heart”, which is the story of her family’s journey leading up to the death of her son Timmy at an early age.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Jandy Draper Sharpe of Collinsville, her son, John Lucas Draper and his wife Allison, of Washington Township, OH, her sister, Helen L. Thornton of Abingdon, and five grandchildren, Lucas Draper, Mary Allison Toppins, Ben Sharpe, Lauren Draper and Jake Sharpe.
The funeral service will be held at 2 P.M. Sunday, August 12, 2012, at Collins Funeral Home in Bassett with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park, Martinsville. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 to 2 P.M. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Bassett Memorial United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 408, Bassett, VA, 24055.
