Michael Lee Hopkins

Born in Martinsville, March 23, 1953, he was a son of the late Chester Lee and Doris Dalton Hopkins. Mike was a musician and was crazy about three things, being a Papoo to his grandchildren, his music, and gambling. He was currently a member of Sunset Drive, the backup group for Percy Sledge, and he also loved playing golf and basketball.

He is survived by two daughters, Brandy Hopkins Terry (Jerry Coe) of Reidsville, NC, Misty Marie Merriman (Jimmy) of Morganton, NC, his wife, Mary “Susie” Sharp, two sisters, Elizabeth Anne Edwards (Charlie) and Vicky DeHart all of Bassett, brother, Robert Dean Hopkins of Roanoke, grandchildren, Brandon Terry (Samantha), Tyler Terry, Abagail Robertson, Jimmy Ray Merriman Jr., great-grandchild, Braylen Leigh Terry, niece, Cindy Turner (Thomas), nephews, Mark and Brian Edwards, Randy DeHart (Brenda), numerous great-nieces and nephews, and many friends, music associates and his dog Gracie.

The family will receive friends from 1 to3 P.M. Sunday, January 26, 2014, at Collins Funeral Home in Bassett, and the funeral service will follow at 3 P.M. with the Rev. Sarah Whitmore officiating. Interment will follow in Patrick Memorial Gardens, Stuart. Memorial contributions may be made to any local high school band program.
