

Born in Patrick County on February 25, 1922, he was a son of the late Daniel C. Washburn and Bertha Bowles Washburn. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lera Craig Washburn, September 26, 2011, a son, Jerry Conner Washburn, sisters, Virginia Via, Viola Newman, Patricia Adams, and his brother, Raymond Washburn.
Bill was a medic in the U.S. Army serving during World War II, was of the Primitive Baptist faith, and he retired from DuPont with over 25 years of service.
He is survived by his daughter, Phyllis Ann Geoghegan of Chesterfield, his son, William (Billy) Washburn II of Bassett, four grandchildren, Jody Dodd, Alice Thompson, Melanie Foster, Michael Washburn, two step-grandchildren, Crystal Whitlow, David Tuttle, and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be at 1 P.M. Monday, June 25, 2012, in Pleasant View Baptist Church with the Rev. Rick Anderson officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with military rites by the Martinsville and Henry County Veteran’s Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from noon until 1 P.M. prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pleasant View Baptist Church building fund. Collins Funeral Home in Bassett is serving the Washburn family.
