

Annie Belle DuBose Vargo, 86, passed away Thursday, May 26, 2011, from complications with Parkinson's disease. She was born in Inwood, W.Va., on Sept. 12, 1924. She came to Louisiana as a young lady to attend business school and stayed after starting a career and her family. Annie Belle worked for 25 years at Baton Rouge Freight and Transportation Corp. as one of the first women in the South who had the job of calculating all freight and transportation costs for businesses in the Baton Rouge area. She excelled in taking shorthand, typing and other secretarial duties. She then worked for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development in a similar position and retired after 20 years. Throughout her life, Annie Belle was a loving and supportive wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed gardening, fishing at the camp, Scrabble and family gatherings. She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Vargo Hollowell and husband Richard, of Baton Rouge; a son, Raymond M. Vargo Jr. and wife Joy, of Glen Gardner, N.J.; four grandchildren, Kevin Calbert and wife Dana, of Denham Springs, Scott Calbert and wife Danielle, of Prairieville, Brandon Vargo, of Carlisle, Pa., and Matthew Vargo, of Kittitas, Wash.; four great-grandchildren, Kirk, Kate, Cole and Gavin; a brother and two sisters. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Raymond M. Vargo Sr.; daughter-in-law, Ginny Dunn Vargo; parents, George and Nellie Dubose, who were of Norwood and Inwood; and three brothers. We would like to thank the entire staff of Hospice of Baton Rouge Butterfly Wing for the compassionate care given to our mother. Visitation at Greenoaks Funeral Home on Friday, May 27, was from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitation resumes at the funeral home on Saturday, May 28, from 10 a.m. until funeral service at noon. Burial will be at the Hungarian Presbyterian Cemetery in Albany.
