Salvaggio Sr., a native of Baton Rouge, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009. He was born to Samuel Salvatore Salvaggio and Katherine Maniscalco Salvaggio on June 6, 1922. Mr. Salvaggio is survived by his children: Carolyn Salvaggio Torrance and husband Jeff, Paul and wife Monica Garrido Salvaggio, Lisa Salvaggio Gilbert and husband Gary, and Laurie Salvaggio Baker and husband Thurston Baker; grandchildren, Matthew Torrance, his wife, Mary Katherine Mancuso Torrance and their son, Jack Torrance; Emily Torrance; Melanie, Sarah and Julia Salvaggio; Isabel, Anthony and Carmen Salvaggio; Claire and Dylan Gilbert; and Louis Miremont and Mioko and Haruko Baker. Preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Beatrice Salvaggio Mese and husband John Mese, Frances Salvaggio Kershaw and Rose Salvaggio Wheeler; brother, George Salvaggio; wife, Emma Christine McLaurin Salvaggio; and son, Anthony G. Salvaggio Jr. Mr. Salvaggio graduated from Catholic High School in 1940, began his college career at LSU, then served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and received an honorable discharge in 1945. In 1948, he received his bachelor's degree in forestry from Louisiana Polytechnic Institute (La. Tech) where he also lettered in football under Coach Joe Aillet. In 1969, he and his wife, Chris, founded Salco Construction Inc. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Red Stick Kiwanis Club and Choctaw Detachment of the Marine Corps League. The family would like to thank Jan Buckner, R.N., case manager and the staff of St. Joseph's Hospice for their exceptional loving care for their father. The family of Mr. Salvaggio will celebrate his life with visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Tuesday, Sept. 8, was from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitation at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church on Wednesday, Sept. 9, from 9:30 a.m. until funeral Mass at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Michael Moroney, celebrant. Pallbearers will be Jeff Torrance, Paul Salvaggio, Gary Gilbert, Matthew Torrance, Louis Miremont and Anthony Salvaggio. In lieu of flowers, the family of Mr. Salvaggio asks that donations be made in his memory to one of the following: St. Joseph's Hospice, American Heart Associationor Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge.
