Austin Albert “Coonie” Kinchen, a native of Bayou Paul and a resident of Baton Rouge, passed away at his residence surrounded by his loved ones at the age of 71 after a long, but courageous battle with cancer. Coonie was a graduate of St. Gabriel High School, where he was a 2 time Louisiana All-State football player. He attended LSU and was a retired supervisor with Turner Industries. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and unselfishly dedicated his life to his family. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, playing cards, and mostly shooting the bull. Coonie had a passion for woodworking and anything he could get his hands on, he was the true definition of a handy man. He was an avid sports fan, but had a special passion for LSU, and truly bled purple and gold. Having never met a stranger, Coonie was a straight shooter. He was conversationally a “jack of all trades”. Coonie will be deeply missed by all who loved and had to opportunity to meet him. He is survived by two daughters, Rachel Kinchen Bateman and husband Ethan, and Ashley Kinchen Atkinson and husband Carl; a son, Eric Jon Kinchen; sisters, Ora Smith, Pearl Wesley, Lovey Savoy, Audrey Shumate, and Carol “Bummie” Kinchen; brothers, Joe “Dood” Kinchen and Paul “Bugger” Kinchen; two grandsons, Cole Austin Kinchen and Brandon Atkinson; a special niece, aka “a third daughter”, Cindy Kinchen; and many other nieces and nephews. Coonie is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rita Cecile Landry Kinchen; his parents, John and Mamie Kinchen; sisters, Wilma Vernice, Thelma Luckey, Ernestine “Teenie” Chadwick, and June “Cat” Curtis; brothers, John Kinchen Jr., Jarson “Jim” Kinchen, Carl “Bear” Kinchen, Roger “Pete” Kinchen, and Huey Kinchen. Visitation will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 from 5pm until 9 pm, and resume on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at St. Jean Vianney Catholic Church from 12pm until Mass of Christian Burial at 2pm. Interment will follow in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be: Eric Kinchen, Adam Avery, Eric Commander, Chris Hebert, Jason Kinchen, and Roderick Vernice.
