Elizabeth "Bettie" Buie, 83, died at home on Monday, Dec. 5, 2011. She was born in Labadieville, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence J. Landry, of Thibodaux. She was born on Nov. 8, 1928. She was a loving, caring and compassionate nurse who attended New Orleans Hotel Dieu School of Nursing and graduated in the Class of 1945 before marrying Malcolm Douglas Buie, on Dec. 16, 1949. They lived together in Baton Rouge and were happily married for 52 years before his death in 2002. She was a loving mother of three daughters. She leaves, Darleen Faye Buie, Phyllis Buie Thibodeaux, and Cynthia "Cindy" Buie Maughan. Buie fulfilled most of her nursing career in the pediatric medical field, employed by Dr. William G. Palfrey. She loved children, football, sewing, reading, homemaking and regular bridge games with her many close, dear lifelong friends. She had a fear of water, but taught many to swim. Buie was a colon cancer survivor of 53 years and, because of her strong faith and resilient spirit, she was able to mentor many cancer victims throughout her life. She battled other health issues and eventually fell victim to Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her father, Clarence J. Landry; her mother, Amanda Dufrene Landry; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce Landry Oncale and Jero Oncale, Marjorie Landry Weimer, Douglas Kees; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Duncan Buie and Virgie Hargrave Buie. She is survived by her sister, Murrel Landry Kees. Buie is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law, Terry R. Thibodeaux and Roy H. Maughan Jr. She was the grandmother of Erin Knighten Pritchard, Ryan Ray Knighten, Brittany McPherson DeoGracias, Misty Thibodeaux Usher, Casey Thibodeaux Corban, Amanda "Mandy" Thibodeaux Samson, Reagan Maughan Hayes, Roy "Trey" Maughan III, Matthew Buie Maughan, Morgan Claire Maughan and great-grandmother to Brooke Knighten, Paige Knighten, Tristen Pritchard, Caleb Pritchard, and Ashton Pritchard, Matthew Usher, William Usher, Audrey Usher, Kelsey Corban, Kady Corban, Carter Corban, Devyn Samson, Henry Hayes, and Charlie Hayes. She was great-great-grandmother to Lucas Thomas. Pallbearers for her service will be, Roy "Trey" Maughan III, Matthew Buie Maughan, Ryan Lynn Knighten, William Michael Usher, Michael Shane Corban, Allen Joseph Samson III, Devyn Ray Samson and Matthew Nelson Usher. The family wishes to thank Anna, Joyce, Janet and Denise for their excellence in care giving, who have shared years of genuine love and compassionate service to our dear mother. Buie's life will be commemorated in visitation at Green Oaks Funeral Home on Thursday, Dec. 8, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and continuing at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 14040 Greenwell Springs Road, Greenwell Springs, on Friday, Dec. 9, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. A mass will follow, commencing at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at the Greenoaks Memorial Park, 9595 Florida Blvd., Baton Rouge.
