Roland, Betty Shirley

A loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, “Mam-Maw” passed away peacefully at her home in Baton Rouge on January 21, 2021. Betty was born February 2, 1927 in Laurel, MS and was a lifelong resident of Baton Rouge. She was a graduate of LSU and taught high school in Baton Rouge for several years.

Betty was a member of First United Methodist Church for 84 years, a 75-year member and devoted supporter of Delta Zeta sorority, and a long-time member of P.E.O. and The Woman’s Club of Baton Rouge. She was an avid LSU fan (especially baseball) and made several road trips with her husband Bob to watch the Tigers play in the College World Series in Omaha. She loved to sew, and needlepoint and crochet were her specialties. Every family member in the Roland household, including grandchildren, had a beautifully knitted Christmas stocking personalized with their names.

Betty is survived by her daughter Sarah Roland Broome; son Robert L. Roland and wife Erin; grandchildren Michael Harrell, Lauren Harrell, LCDR Robert Alexander Harrell (USN), Ashley Roland Wolff, and Robert Gage Roland; and four great-grandchildren: Emma, Dalton, Amelia, and Jamie. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Robert L. “Bob” Roland; her daughter Linda Roland Harrell; her father and mother Mr. & Mrs. W.E. Shirley; her sister Naomi Mae Shirley, and her brothers, W.E. Shirley Jr., and Ralph Shirley Sr.

The family extends a very special thanks to her wonderful caregivers - Angela, Mable, Diane, Harriet, Malissa, Alice, Regina, Malinda, and The Hospice of Baton Rouge for their loving care and compassion.
