A loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she was born Aug. 27, 1915, on China Grove Plantation in Raccourci Island. A longtime resident of Baton Rouge, she died peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011, at home surrounded by her loving family. She was 96. Bonnie moved to New Roads in 1922, where her father had an active role in the supervision and construction of the Mississippi River levee and where Bonnie graduated from Poydras High School. She then met the love of her life, Roy Fugler, to whom she was married for 66 years until his death on April 10, 2001. Together, they moved to Port Allen, where along with a group of volunteers, were instrumental in bringing the Sisters of Saint Joseph to Port Allen and assisted them in the formation of Holy Family Parochial School. Bonnie and her husband then moved to Baton Rouge and joined Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church until they became charter members of St. Thomas More Catholic Church and School, where they were active supporters and volunteers. Bonnie also was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis since January 1938, and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas for more than 70 years. She was a past member of the Opera Guild, Foundation for Historical Louisiana, Pointe Coupee Historical Society as well as the Ladies Altar Society. Bonnie and her husband together shared a life of being active community volunteers, having served for years at the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, where they were the first couple to be awarded the Anna B. Lipsey Volunteer of the Year Award. They also were active members and volunteers with the Mended Hearts Association, Make Today Count and other community organizations. Bonnie was the most kind and generous person you could ever meet. She was always soft spoken, always a lady. She was deeply religious, very patriotic and as anyone would tell you, one of the best cooks in the whole South. She had a zest for life and understood and cherished what was really important in life. Her greatest joys were the simple things … loving, laughing, cooking, daily prayer and just spending time with her friends and family whom she so deeply loved. Visiting at St. Patrick Catholic Church from 12:30 p.m. until religious service at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Martin. Interment in Greenoaks Memorial Park.
