Butch Stegall

Horace “Butch” Stegall passed away on Friday, December 15, 2023, at the age of 79. He was born on October 18, 1944 in Delhi, Louisiana. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Ann Winston Stegall; son, Jeff Stegall (Kristi); stepson, Winston Morris (Stephanie); stepdaughter, D’Ann Morris Thompson (Bart); grandchildren, Joshua Stegall; Caroline Stegall; Winston Chase Morris (Stefani); Brennan Morris; Brooke Morris; great-grandchildren, Audriana Morris, and Reese Morris. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd Bryan Stegall and Inez Hollis Stegall; sister, Relda Johnson; and brother, Roy Stegall.

Butch graduated from Central High School in Delhi, LA in 1962. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology (1966), and a Master of Science in Biology (1968) from Northeast Louisiana State College. He attended Tulane University for post graduate study in Ichthyology. He served in the U.S. Army for two years at the Research Institute of Environmental Medicine in Natick, Massachusetts. Butch spent his early career as a sporting goods rep and enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. Later he entered State employment for 30 years. He eventually retired from the Louisiana Department of Agriculture as a biologist and environmental specialist. After retirement, Butch worked at Bass Pro Shop and KeppCo, LLC “just for fun.”

Butch was a gifted fisherman, hunter, woodworker, photographer, leather craftsman, writer, gardener, pseudo-meteorologist, and animal lover. There was rarely a talent he couldn’t master- nor a challenge he wouldn’t face. Of all of his achievements, he was most proud of his marriage, his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They were his whole world.
