Carl Earl Austin, 89 years of age, died in his home in Stillwater, Ok. Monday, June 20, 2017, at 6:04 p.m. He was surrounded by his family as his angels took him home to Jesus. Carl was born on September 7, 1927, to Early Morn Hotard, a schoolteacher, and Clarence Earnest Austin, the school principal in Bourg, Louisiana. Carl grew up in the Deep South, fishing and living along the bayous of Terrebonne Parish. He served his country during World War II, joining the Navy and taking care of others as a hospital corpsman. While serving, he met his future wife, Marion Eugenia Darsey through his best friend and brother of Marion, Jack Darsey. They married on July 13, 1952, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and enjoyed 65 years of marriage. Carl earned a degree in petroleum engineering from Louisiana State University in 1954 and began a 38 year career with Halliburton Services. During his career he held three patents. He was also the project director for field testing an experimental gas turbine powered fracturing unit. He assisted in the design and testing of the first experimental gas turbine powered cementing unit. He worked on US missile silos to prevent subsurface water from entering the silos. He was instrumental in the development of closed circuit television monitoring of sanitary sewers, inspection and sealing. A giant among men, his primary devotion was to his family. He raised two daughters with Marion and brought them up cane fishing on the bayous throughout the summer months as they returned from Oklahoma to Louisiana. He was an extraordinarily kind man with the heart of a servant. He participated in Girl Scouting even long after his children were grown. As a family, they hiked, camped and watched the clouds and stars laying in the grass of their front yards wherever they lived. A quiet and honorable man, he was humble, loving and loyal. His faith was always grounded in Jesus Christ; however, when he was “good and ready” at the age of 76 he was baptized in Edmond, Oklahoma. Carl enjoyed woodworking and making family treasures that will last generations. He is survived by his wife, Marion, of the home as well as daughter, Laura Austin Thomas and son-in-law, George Thomas of Stillwater, Oklahoma. His granddaughters are Darci Anne Thomas of Oklahoma City and Alexandra Faith Thomas of Stillwater, Oklahoma. He is survived by beloved sisters and brothers in laws, Jack and Jessie Darsey of Slaughter, Louisiana, Shirley (Darsey) and Johnny O’Connor of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Linda (Darsey) and Dr. Wayne Sparks of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was predeceased in death by his daughter, Pamela Sue Austin. Visitation will be on Monday, June 26, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. until funeral service begins at 2:00 p.m. at Greenoaks Funeral Home at 9595 Florida Blvd., Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The Reverend Tommy French Jr. will officiate. Carl will be buried on-site amid the pines, dogwoods, azaleas and oaks next to his daughter, Pamela. The family wishes to thank the very special people in his life that took such good care of him, his aides, Martha Campbell and Chelbi Schaffer as well as Good Shepard Hospice. Their care and concern was a great comfort to him and us. In lieu of flowers please donate to the hospice of your choice as they are invaluable to those taking this journey home to Jesus.
