
He was a retired lieutenant with the Baton Rouge Police Department with 30 years of service, a native of Independence and a resident of Baton Rouge. He died at 12:29 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center at age 60. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, having received two Purple Heart medals. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Thursday, Sept. 17, was from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visitation at the funeral home chapel on Friday from 9 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Donald Mahan. Interment at Resthaven Gardens of Memory. C.G. is survived by his wife of 24 years, Darleen Phillips Johnson; daughters, Sarah Johnson and Kimberly Hood; sons, Brandon Phillips and wife Amanda, and Charles G. Johnson Jr.; sisters, Beverly Wascom and husband Jack, and Brenda Dorsa; grandchildren, Kylie, Kaylin and Kinsey Phillips and Shayde Johnson; mother-in-law, Anna Phillips; numerous nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; best friend, Rusty Rounds; and loyal companions, Annabelle and Walker. Preceded in death by his parents, John and Myrtle Garon; brother, Ed Bartholomew; father-in-law, Sulcer Phillips; and brother-in-law, Anthony Dorsa. Pallbearers will be Brandon Phillips, Rusty Rounds, Melvin Sibley, Glenn Pizzalato, Jack Wascom, Perry LaBauve, Noel Coffey and Bob Struppeck. Honorary pall-bearers are Police Chief Jeff LeDuff, Josh and Chad Rounds and members of the Baton Rouge Police Honor Guard. C.G. received the Outstanding Police Officer Award in 1979. He was a member of the Louisiana Peace Officers Association, Fraternal Order of Police and Military Order of the Purple Heart Louisiana. The family would like to thank Dr. Gerald Miletello, Dr. William Russell, Dr. James Hargroder, their staffs, Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center MSCC of the Critical Care Unit, the Pulmonary staff of Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center as well as many friends for their support. C.G. was an avid hunter, fisherman, LSU baseball fan, cook and was also known for his landscaping expertise. He was a loving husband, father, brother and friend who will be missed by all who knew him. Memorial donations may be made to Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge.
