Dorothy was born on February 25, 1938, to the late Oscar and Erma (Dickerson) Cunningham Sr. of Labadieville, LA. She was the oldest of six siblings.
She graduated from W.H. Reed High School, Napoleonville, LA class of 1956. She attended Dillard University where she majored in nursing. She started her life career in nursing and ended it as a private sitter to those whose health was failing.
From her union to Cecil Hazley, her twin daughters were born. Cecilia Gorman and the late Cecil Southall.
Dorothy confessed her life to Jesus Christ and was baptized by the late Pastor Sherman Washington at Saint Mark Baptist Church in Labadieville LA. She later moved to New Orleans and served on the Usher Board at Stranger Homes Baptist Church. Later joined Greater Saint Stephen FGBC under Bishop Paul S. Morton, where she served as part of The New Members and Sunday School Ministries. After Katrina moved her to Baton Rouge, she joined Changing A Generation FGBC under Bishop Edward Pierce where she served on The Nurse Guided Ministry until her health began to fail.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter, Cecilia Gorman (Joe), two sisters Mable Cureaux (Roy), Harriet Castine, one brother Oscar Cunningham Jr (Riki). Four grandchildren, Darrlynn Brister Alston (Clifton), Darryl Brister Jr (Toi), Cameron Southall, and Zoe Gorman. Two Great-Grandchildren, a Brother-in-Law Ivory Landry, and a host of nieces, nephews, loved ones and close friends.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, daughter Cecil Southall, and sisters Helen Frey and Alma Landry
