

"A resident of Baton Rouge, Dorothy passed away peacefully in her sleep at 8pm on Thursday May 17, 2018 at age 83. She was born in Hammond on January 2, 1935 and spent her childhood and early adulthood there until she started her own family in Baton Rouge. Dorothy was a 1957 graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education. She started her teaching career in 1957 in East Baton Rouge Parish at Howell Park Elementary. She also taught at Jefferson Terrace Elementary and Mayfair Elementary and retired with 37 years of service. After retirement, she continued volunteering at Wildwood Elementary for several years. Dorothy loved LSU baseball and enjoyed spending Friday and Saturday nights at the baseball park with friends and family. She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth H. Deer; son, Wayne Carson Heap Jr. and wife Robyn; grandchildren, Joshua Heap and wife Melissa, Trevor Heap, Peyton Heap, Nicholas Deer and fiancée Brittany Pennington, and Avery Deer; and great grandchildren, Matthew Heap, Madison Heap, and Isidora Deer. She was preceded in death by her mother, Verna Hayden Black; father, Kenneth B. Black; and son-in-law, Reginald Deer. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to all staff members at Heritage Manor and specifically her Hospice nurse, Stephanie Taylor. At the request of Dorothy, there will not be a memorial service.
